Lent

a time for reflection and thought...

Lent is a time of preparation for the great festival of Easter.  A time for reflection and thought.

A prayer for Lent

Dear God, our Father,

When I stop to think
I am amazed at Your love for me.
You created me, and all the Universe.
You never cease to sustain me with life.
You have given me my friends and relatives
and all that is good and beautiful
and true, to enjoy.
Most of all You have shown Your love
by sending us Your Son.

Help me to keep this Lent
as an opportunity for
knowing Him more clearly,
loving Him more dearly
and following Him more nearly,
day by day.

Amen

Lent Groups

this year we are holding house groups to follow Robert Warren and Kate Bruce's course:

Life Calling

In five interactive sessions this course aims to help groups explore

  • Called by God discovering the shape of God's call
  • Called from within, drawing out the call and gifts that God has planted in us,
  • Called out: being set free from everything that stops us responding to God's call
  • Called up understanding how God calls us to join in with us loving care of the world.
  • Called: growing in our sense of calling beyond the end of the course.

the Wednesday next  before Palm Sunday

In 1648 the will of John Reynolds bequeathed to us the sum of £1 for the preaching of a sermon on the 'Wednesday next before Palm Sunday'.  We revived the custom in 2005 when Bishop David preached (and got his pound!).  On 24 March this year, we hear The Reverend Professor Richard Burridge speaking on the Cross through Four Eyes.

Lent Appeals

In Lent we try not to see it as just a time of giving up, but also a time of taking things on.  This year St John's will be supporting both the

PCDC -  a charity supporting destitute youngsters in Palestine and

The Box, Epping

providing much needed support for youngsters in Epping.
