The Aumbry
Set into the wall panelling of the Lady Chapel
|
|
The Blessed Sacrament
(consecrated
bread and wine) is reserved in the aumbry so that it can be taken to the sick
and those who are unable to attend the Eucharist at Church. The
aumbry also forms a focus for devotion and private prayer. The
sanctuary lamp that hangs in front of the aumbry dignifies Christ's
presence.
The ornate
door is set into a wide border of lapis lazuli behind a fretwork grille
and is decorated with a representation of the “Pelican in Piety”
– the pelican was said to wound her breast in order to feed her young
and images of the pelican were used to symbolise Christ dying for us to
bring us Salvation.
The
text
below
the aumbry reads: ET VERBUM CARO FACTUM EST - And the
Word was made flesh.
