The Bell Chamber
Picture taken during the  Extravagant Visions Flower Festival - 2003

The belfry houses a peal of eight bells.  The Treble Bell was first cast in 1650 and recast in 1913 and between 1910 and 1913 a further seven bells were added.

We have a group of keen and dedicated bellringers and the bells are rung for all principal services and for special occasions. The first peal was rung on 16 December 1913.

On the High Street side of the Tower there is a clock which dates from 1908. It has a chiming mechanism and was the bequest of Mr Walter Tweed. It is maintained with the generous help of the Epping Council.

They are housed in a Tower, 96ft in height and made of 5,000 tons of Parham Park stone from Bath.  When The Revd R. L. Allwork followed Edward Buckmaster as Vicar, the local Gazette wrote that he would:

"find a good deal of unfinished work in his new Church ... the north aisle awaits early completion and the erection of a tower, ...."

Barely two years later on the 26 April 1909, Mrs Aline Wythes, accompanied by her husband, Ernest, lay the last stone at 12 noon to complete the tower.  Miss Allwork, the vicar's sister, hoisted the flag and, from the vestry door, Miss C E Green cut the string to set the clock in motion.
