The Pulpit

THE PULPIT was made in 1914 and given by
the Trustees of St John’s.
It is elaborately
carved and shows the 'Holy Men of Old':

Moses holding the
tablets of law;
Elijah the
prophet;
and St John The Baptist who linked the Old Testament with
the New. >

< Alternating between them are angels, each bearing a shield with a
special device – IHS the sacred monogram denoting Christ's name; PAX
(Peace) and AGNUS DEI (Lamb of God).

| The figures of the four
evangelists are on the stairway. At the foot of each is their
representation in art – a Man for St Matthew; a Lion for St Mark; an Ox
