The Pulpit
Picture taken during the  Extravagant Visions Flower Festival - 2003

THE PULPIT was made in 1914 and given by the Trustees of St John’s.

It is elaborately carved and shows the 'Holy Men of Old':

Moses holding the tablets of law;
Elijah the prophet;
and St John The Baptist who linked the Old Testament with the New. >

< Alternating between them are angels, each bearing a shield with a special device – IHS the sacred monogram denoting Christ's name; PAX (Peace) and AGNUS DEI (Lamb of God).

The figures of the four evangelists are on the stairway. At the foot of each is their representation in art – a Man for St Matthew; a Lion for St Mark; an Ox for St Luke; and an Eagle for St John.  Shown here is St Mark >
