The garden is based on the 7th century Lindisfarne Gospels. There is a cross in the centre based on a Celtic cross, which are usually encircled to remind us of the never-ending love of God - a love poured out for us on the Cross. The circle of The Wheel Cross is broken to represent the broken journey of the coffin of St Cuthbert, carried to his final resting place in Durham Cathedral by the monks of Lindisfarne. High Crosses are the amongst the best known symbols of the Celtic Church. Some marked the boundaries to sacred sites, others were waymarks guiding the pilgrim; others were preaching crosses where roaming preachers would stand as if in a pulpit and proclaim the Gospel. These Crosses can remind us of Christ's journey on the Cross and help us to focus on the words our Lord spoke when he said: Come take up your Cross and follow me
The sculpture by Fenwick Lawson has St Cuthbert's face in the centre of the Cross.
