The Churches

The team can offer a range of beautiful churches in which to be married.

The Church of St John the Baptist, Epping,

All Saints' Church, Theydon Garnon,

All Saints' Church, Epping Upland or

The Church of St Alban the Martyr, Coopersale,

St Alban's Church, Coopersale
seats 120 and is situated at the edge of a village overlooking the Essex countryside.  It is a mid 19th century church, providing an intimate feeling wedding in a rural location, whilst being easily accessible from the M25 and M11.  If you get married at St Alban's, Coopersale we can provide an organ and choir.  Should you want flowers, please contact us to discuss this.  The church stands in attractive grassed traditional churchyard with a rural backdrop.

All Saints', Epping Upland seats 200.  It is an older church with part of the present nave dating to the 13th century.  It is found in a very rural location with views across fields in every direction.  The church stands in traditional churchyard with a rural back drop.  It has its own spacious car park and is accessible from the M11 and M25.  If you get married at All Saints', Epping Upland we can provide an organ, choir and bells.  The church flower arrangers can provide flowers in consultation should this be required.  There is ramped access to the church.

All Saints', Theydon Garnon
also seats 200.  This church dates to the 13th century with additions through the centuries.  It is set amongst fields in the Essex countryside in a traditional churchyard but is easily accessible from the M25 and M11.   All Saints', Theydon Garnon is found down a quiet cul-de-sac with off road parking.   If you get married at All Saints', Theydon Garnon there are an organ and choir at your disposal and a newly hung peal of bells to ring out joyfully.  Flowers can be provided on request and on consultation.  There is a ramp to provide wheelchair access to the church.

The Church of St John the Baptist, Epping is the largest church in the team and seats 350-400 guests but can also feel intimate with far smaller numbers.  It is a Victorian Gothic building designed by GF Bodley and the completeness of the architect's vision is to be recognised in the Grade II* listing.   The nave has a wonderful acoustic that adds greatly to the atmosphere.  St John's has a particularly fine organ and can provide an organist and choir to accompany your wedding.  There is an eight bell peal to ring out and an attractive garden outside the church for your photographs.  The Flower Guild at St John's will provide flowers should this be required, in consultation with you.  St John's is found right in the middle of Epping, a small market town on the outskirts of London, which is easily accessible from the M11 and M25 and by public transport. It is 10 minutes walk from Epping London Underground station and many of the local buses stop outside the church.   St John's has also been working on its accessibility and has an induction loop and ramped access.

What to do next

If you would like to get married in one of the churches of the Epping Team, please contact the Team Office either by e-mail or on 01992 575570 to book an appointment to discuss what you would like with one of the clergy team.  There are regular Saturday morning appointments to plan weddings, but if this isn't convenient, please contact us to book another time.

Every year the Team holds a wedding preparation meeting at the beginning of the year for all couples planning to marry in the year to help you plan your wedding.

Bells

Bells are available at the Church of St John the Baptist, Epping;  All Saints', Epping Upland and All Saints', Theydon Garnon.  It takes some time to put together a bell-ringing team, so we appreciate hearing a few months in advance if you would like the bells to be rung at your wedding.

Organ

All the team churches have organs and experienced organists to play at your wedding.   They are very happy to liaise with you and discuss your musical choices. The organ at St John's Church, Epping is particularly fine and has just been refurbished to improve its quality.

Choir

If you would like a choir to support the singing at your wedding, we can provide this at all the team churches.  All four churches have choir stalls for the choir and there are robed choirs at St John's Church, Epping, All Saints', Epping Upland and All Saints', Theydon Garnon.  If you attend a service at St John's Church, Epping or All Saints' Theydon Garnon, the choir can be seen in action. Simon Winters, the choir master at St John's, runs a number of other choirs locally.

Flowers

All the churches have teams of flower arrangers used to creating displays for those churches.  They would be delighted to decorate the church for your wedding, should you so wish and will work with you to your theme and budget.

Where can I get married?

If you want to marry in any of the parish churches of the Epping District Team, as listed above, the new Church of England rules require you to be able to show one of the following seven connections with the parish involved.

That one of you:

  • was baptised in the parish concerned or

  • was prepared for confirmation in the parish or

  • has at any time lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or

  • has at any time regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months or

That one of your parents, at any time after you were born:

  • has lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or

  • has regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months or

That one of your parents or grandparents:

  • was married in the parish

Where this list mentions church services - going to normal church services, baptism, confirmation or marriage - this only applies  to Church of England services.

Even if none of the above conditions apply, it may well be possible for you to marry in one of the Epping Team churches, so please still contact us to make an appointment to discuss this.

If you live within one of the team parishes and are marrying in a church that's not one of the team churches, your parish church will still need to read the banns for you.  They will also support you as you prepare for the wedding, and afterwards too, so in this case, please contact us too.
