Centenary 2009

100 years of the church building

Centenary Celebrations 24 April 2009 to 26 April 2009

The weekend's celebrations ranged from an art exhibition and concert on the Friday night to an Open Day on the Saturday, with stalls, refreshments, the archives and the tower open.  On Sunday we had a Centenary Communion presided over by the Bishop of Chelmsford, Bishop John Gladwin, followed by an opportunity to try bell ringing and two parish parties in the evening.

Art Exhibition

The Art Exhibition, from Epping Art Society, set up in the North Aisle showed a series of pictures on the theme of Painting Big ... some of the paintings on the north wall ...

Even more of the paintings hung on the north wall ... and the paintings down by the west end of the north aisle
Church Open Day on Saturday 25 April

Admiring the exhibition of church history in the South Aisle.

Geoffrey (the Reverend Geoffrey Connor) and Tony Harvey, the church archivist, with the historical church records for inspection,

The Bodley chasuble, restored for the centenary of Bodley's death in 2007,  was on display.

Refreshments were served at the back of the church.  The art exhibition can be seen behind those who lunched. Looking west down the South Aisle towards the font, were a series of boards showing some of the facets of the history.
The busy plant stall in action.  The conditions outside were chilly

Looking down the church garden to see the plant stall, the Traidcraft stall in the gazebo and another plant stall behind.

There was a red and white garland around the door into the church.
Tower Opening

The tower from the High Street.

On duty at the foot of the tower, really, although they look like they are just chatting ...
(and I've been resisting captioning this one:  Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil ...)

The first ladder - this one leads from the bell ringing chamber

The second ladder up to the clock mechanism platform

The third and vertical ladder up through the bell chamber

Photograph taken from the last ladder up to the roof - the gangway over the bells is seen to the right of the picture. One of the four weather vanes at the top of the tower.

View from the top of the church tower looking towards London.  The white splodge on the far left is the Millennium / O2 Dome, the next set of towers are Canary Wharf and the towers on the far right include 34 St Mary Axe (The Gherkin) and the NatWest Tower.
Centenary Communion Service

The Bishop of Chelmsford, Bishop John Gladwin, processing in, wearing the Bodley Chasuble.  He really is sticking his tongue out - at the child on the far left of the picture. The Bishop preaching his sermon from the pulpit ... ... and sharing the Peace in the congregation ...
asking the children what they had been doing ... ... saying the grace with the assistance of one of the younger congregants ... ... admiring the work of the Go Generation that day.
meeting the Mayor, Ben Murphy, over coffee ... ... coffee in hand, talking to a member of the congregation, ... the readers in training ... ... and with his wife, probably talking about Prison Ministry.
Bell ringing

After the service there was the opportunity visit the tower: the Tower Captain, Jane Walters, the Bishop & his wife. Geoffrey learning the ropes with the help of Pete Milan.  Anyone coming along to try is supervised by either Pete or Jane the Tower Captain.  The Bell Ringing team is always open to new people wanting to join the team.  The Tower was kept open to allow other people to discover the joys of bell ringing
Parish Party
The church as a party venue, with buffet at the west end.  The labels on people's backs are from one of the party games.  Everyone was given the name of one of a pair.  The game was to find your partner from chatting to the other guests.
Other games played included musical chairs ... ... and Pass the Parcel
