Lindisfarne 2009

the parish pilgrimage 2009

The Pilgrimage

Coming out of church the first evening after the Opening Worship there was a rainbow over the Castle Garden The view from the church door looking at Lindisfarne Castle past the ruined Priory.  The light was beginning to fade into grey as this was taken at around 9pm, so dusk, and it was raining enough for the rainbow. We were staying at Marygate House, under the care of Ian, the warden, seen here in the doorway with Kath.
We enjoyed a series of talks on the history of the island, given by the Reverend Canon Kate Tristram.  This was taken during the first talk on St Aidan, held in the sitting room at  Marygate House.  St Aidan established the first monastery on Lindisfarne. The talk on St Cuthbert and St Hild on the Wednesday morning in the reading room ... ... really enthused some of the group
The Altar at St Mary's Parish Church, Lindisfarne.  We attended morning, evening and night prayer on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, sitting in the choir stalls.   The morning and evening prayers are part of the island's usual services and we were invited to join the parish. The final fascinating talk on the Thursday morning, again held in the sitting room, was on the Lindisfarne Gospels - a facsimile of which is sitting on the table in front of Kate and left out for us to study at our leisure afterwards, although some people were keen to investigate immediately.
The Lindisfarne Grace hanging on the dining room wall, with musical score ... ... meant we were 'persuaded' to sing grace.  This is before lunch on the Wednesday.  Lunch was soup, tomato that day, bread rolls, cheese, biscuits and fruit. Kate explaining the customs of the Petting Stone outside the Priory
In the old monastery, looking up at the rainbow arch Inside the chapter house - Kate described the wind as normal for Lindisfarne Standing in what was the warming room with a view of the church behind The kitchen and larder areas - near where a sink had been.
The swallows were an evocative sight and sound of the island.  Here is one nesting in the church porch. We also had time to explore the island - here Jill, Carole and Poppy have been looking at the seals off Cuddy's Isle. Kath celebrated her birthday (early) up on the Island - making the last evening meal a celebration one. The final prayers of sending were said around The Journey - a sculpture by Fenwick Lawson - inside the church.
